Meet Arcana Academy's First Student: Jessica Darke

Rebecca Sun, Socialite

Jessica Darke was the first student at Arcana Academy and this month marks her two-year anniversary of being here. Learn how she got started here and how she managed to get a week off of work to go to Burning Man in her interview below:

Full Name: Jessica Darke

Position: Agency Liaison

Year Started Here: January 2012

You were the first student here... How did it all come together?
Serendipity. I was living in Kansas City at the time and saw a post on Facebook that Shane and his partner were looking to form a new agency in Los Angeles, I called him and left a message. The rest is history!

What is your favorite aspect about working here?
That I am constantly learning and evolving. I feel that I am in an environment that supports that and it's awesome.

What were your jobs like before this?
I worked at a restaurant in Kansas City,"The Classic Cup", for 12 years--the people there were like my family. I also worked in museum exhibition design and informal education. I find that I am drawn to small business owners and entrepreneurs, I have only ever worked for them.

If you could trade places with someone in the office for a day who would it be?
Probably Alex because he has so many skills that he can make whatever he wants. I respect that.

So if you could learn one skill what would it be?
There are so many... I was kicked-out of Hebrew school and started relearning Hebrew a few years ago, it would be nice to fully grasp the language. It has such a rich history. I played the trombone when I was younger and have a romantic vision of picking it back up. And painting. I love paint.

What is one thing a lot of people don't know about you that they might find surprising?
I played on a traveling basketball team when I was younger. When people see me now they probably couldn't imagine me as a basketball player...

Word around the office is that the headmasters let you take a week off to go to Burning Man. How was that?
[Headmasters] Shane and Lee fully supported my "Virgin Burn." Lee lent me his tent and said "go."

Are you going again next year?
Yes. I have grand visions.

If you were to put something in a time capsule for people to remember you what would it be?
Some type of empty vessel, like a cup, bowl or vase, because the person who finds it could use it for anything. They could put their soup in it, make a flower vase, or drink their coffee from it. I think that's all we would really be able to offer people.

Where could we find you on a Friday night?
My routine lately has been to go to a yoga class and then go out and dance. I love that routine because you get the natural high from yoga and then it continues onto the dance floor.

What would be the title of the biography of your life?
Well I want to open an art gallery, "After Darke". So I would name it after that.

If you had a time machine would you travel back in time or to the future?
Hmm... I don't know because the idea of the unknown is so fascinating, but also there is so much that we don't know about the past. I think I would go back to Ancient Egypt though and see if the pyramids were really energy conductors. I would love to see some of that ancient magic.

Lastly, I just want to point out that you drink a lot of water...
Ya, I drink a lot of water... Everyone I've worked for has commented that they have to get extra water to support my hydration habit. ... I also typically eat chocolate before 10 am.
