Let´s talk about Gillette, baby.

Jessica Darke, Producer

Here we go, another take on Gillette´s most recent advertising campaign.

While we can all appreciate what Gilette is trying to do by encouraging men to "shave their toxic masculinity," we as a culture need to remember that on many occasions "boys will be boys" and "girls will be girls" and this is a truly wonderful yin/yang aspect of humanity and sexuality. Yes, there are outliers and there are bullies, but I hope Gillette is able to curb some of the toxic behavior with their messaging. Let a man be hairy. Let a man be masculine. Let a man roar into the mirror as the testosterone surges through their body. I will say that the conversation we need to be having is about responsibility and taking responsibility and ownership for the way our hormones (men and women) make us feel and behave. Women, yes we PMS, but let´s not use that as a scapegoat to be rude and men, yes, your tendencies can at times be toward aggression, but that does not make it OK to use violence. We all have urges and we can all practice restraint.

May we all strive to shave the toxic behavior from our lives and slather on compassion and empathy wherever we go.

Thank you to Gilette for bringing this conversation out of the afternoon shadow and into the mainstream, once again, for we as the people of the internet are talking about an important social issue.
